The number of medications available for the various types of anxiety increases constantly. Of course, the giant drug companies each want to be the ones that find the next wonder drug. Until they find it, however, there are a number of other useful medications available. Right now, let's take a look at Wellbutrin and anxiety.
This particular drug, also called Buproprion, was approved in 1986 by the US Food and Drug Administration. When it came out, it was unique in the way it operated, thus, putting it in a class by itself. Wellbutrin and anxiety had created a new relationship - one that worked and lasted.
Up until now, other medications had set out to work on two of the three neurotransmitter chemicals. The new guy on the block however had two advantages over the other: first, its chemical structure was different; and second, it can also affect the other of the three neurotransmitter chemicals. The three chemicals are called serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
Because of this unique action on the dopamine, Wellbutrin is classified as a dopamine reuptake blocking compound. This refers to that action that occurs when a message needs to be given between two cells in our nervous system. One cell will form a neurotransmitter by secreting it out, and another cell will receive the message by picking up (detecting) the message by its receptor proteins. After the message has been delivered, the cells either reabsorb the neurotransmitter, or will destroy it. This is called the reuptake. Wellbutrin prevents, or inhibits, the reuptake, which increases the effect of the neurotransmitter (dopamine).
The increased effect of dopamine levels means an increased effect between Wellbutrin and anxiety. All three of the chemical neurotransmitters have much to do with our mental and physical regulation of things like anxiety, pain or pleasure, alertness, panic levels, and our sleep. Where other medications had brought limited effects, and a number of undesirable side effects, Wellbutrin and anxiety had been able to work in better ways.
While medications have some side effects, it appears that Wellbutrin and anxiety are a good mix. Not only does it fair better in the side-effects department, but it also has a few advantages, too. It seems that Wellbutrin, over the others, is much less likely to affect the sex life adversely. In fact, there is some indication that shows that sexual dysfunction caused by other medications may even be able to be reversed by this drug. Another advantage is that it is used to help smokers quit smoking, in the form of Zyban. It also helps to prevent a serious weight gain, too.
Controlling anxiety is difficult in a world that is rapidly changing and places great demands on us. Wellbutrin and anxiety, has certainly been made for each other. Of course, every medication used to treat anxiety must be prescribed by your doctor. Even then, he cannot be sure of how it will work in your situation. Only some trial and error, with a little fine-tuning, will really tell.
Some of the side effects include: nausea, stomach aches, insomnia, dry mouth, loss of appetite, and possibly epileptic seizure (when taken in larger doses only). Because of some more serious side effects in certain situations, there are some individuals that must not take Wellbutrin. This includes:
The best results to be found in Wellbutrin and anxiety can only be learned by further research on your part, and with proper consultation with your doctor.
