Driving Phobia: Causes and Helping Tips
March 10, 2010

Today driving can be a stressful experience. Stresses build each time we drive and severe stresses can result if a person has ever been in an accident or a road-rage incident. This stress along with a fear of driving can cause a lot of discomfort. As a result of their experiences on the road some people will even develop driving phobias. There are some people who develop a driving phobia with no apparent cause.

Those with driving phobia often experience flashbacks, loss of sleep, irritability, a change of personal character, anxiety and a feeling of hopelessness. There is a form of driver therapy that can help those with driving phobia to regain their confidence and get back out on the road again.

Fear, Anxiety and Phobia

Fear is a natural response when a person is faced with an unknown situation or a situation where you face danger. Those who have a fear of driving will still be able to drive but will often worry about it before they get in the car.

Anxiety takes many forms and has multiple symptoms. Driving anxiety will often develop after a fearful situation has been avoided. Often times those with driving anxiety will experience symptoms such as sweating, upset stomach, hyperventilation and exhaustion.

Driving phobia is something that disables a person from driving. People with phobias view it as a protection against a perceived danger. Those with driving phobia will often have severe panic attack and be unable to drive even short distances.

Overcoming Driving Phobia

While severe cases of driving phobia will need outside help there are several approaches you can take to overcome your driving phobia by yourself. However, if you experience anxiety while driving and are taking medication to help these symptoms you should check with your doctor or pharmacist first to make sure you can drive while taking your medication. When overcoming your phobia the first place to start in finding out what your belief is regarding driving.

As long as something remains true we will believe in it, this is how we make sense of the environment around us. We maintain our beliefs by constant reinforcement. Driving phobia often develops after an accident and then the belief that accidents are common can set into a person's brain and cause fear or anxiety to develop whenever they think about the incident again.

Tension and Driving

One of the biggest factors in driving accidents is tension. When you are tense you have a tendency to restrict the amount of attention you give to your surroundings. This can lead to mistakes which then increase the driving phobia. So before you attempt to drive take fifteen seconds to relax and take the tension out of your body. This will help break the cycle of driving phobias. If you still have problems getting rid of your tension then you can consider going to a therapist or a driver training course that will help teach you relaxation methods.

The key to getting rid of your driving phobia is to break the cycle. The most effective way to doing this is controlling your tension and fears by breathing. It is best to learn a slow, deep breathing that can help slow down your bodies functions so you don't panic or experience anxiety symptoms.

Starting to Drive Again

When you start to drive again the best thing you can do to prevent your driving phobia from returning is to focus on what you do successfully while in the car. You may have to start with small steps such as just starting the car and sitting in it. Then when you do drive for the first time you can maybe go out simply to drive and for no other read. By taking these small steps you can focus more on your successes in your return to driving that soon you won't even notice your driving phobia anymore.
