Belonephobia: Fear of Needles
October 6, 2008

Belonephobia is a situation which is referred to as the fear of needles. This situation is usually observed in people who might have had a previous history in relation with needles.

Belonephobia is referred to as the fear of needles which are experienced in many of the individuals. It is defined as an unreasonable and altered response which occurs as a result of the fear towards needles. Belonephobia is seen is very few people in and around. It is experienced only in 10% of individuals. There are treatments available for this kind of phobia, but it takes long.

One among the simple ways to get along with Belonephobia is three simple steps of behavioral approach which includes recognition and relaxation, control and preparation and even graded exposure. These are simple steps which can be adopted by anyone without any difficulty. They just make situations much easier and also help to free oneself from Belonephobia. It should be always remembered that Belonephobia is a situation which might have arisen either due to some childhood fear towards needles or due to tremendous sensitivity towards pain. Treatments given include hypnosis, behavioral therapy and even counseling.

The first step out of the simple ways to get along with Belonephobia is recognition and relaxation which is the most important step. This step includes the identification of the person who is at risk of the disease and understanding the symptoms as this makes a person educated about the situation.

The second step is control and preparation that makes a child much more confident and energetic to indulge in making a particular decision and also to search and select different ways to become free of tension. But the most important thing is the support of the parent that a child wants. This is the primary need of the child which helps the child to choose their own surrounding which prepares a ground for them to chat and ask queries and discuss them with others.

The next step is graded exposure which is accomplished only when the parents feel that they have to move on. This step is entirely left to the parent as they are given the task of observing the reaction of their child towards various medical equipments which are used during different procedures. Everything from the cotton to the needle has to be observed. Such an observation makes them stress relieved and even depended on parents for doubts.

Belonephobia is a situation which is seen mostly from the age of 5 years. It is seen especially in patients, parents of young children and even in health care workers like phlebotomists and anesthetist. Symptoms associated with Belonephobia are many such as nausea, vomiting, sweating, loneliness, dizziness, drying of mouth, feeling sick, shaking, inability to speak or clearly think, fear of dying, becoming violent as being mad or getting out of control, a feeling of aloofness from the situation, insomnia, fainting and many more.

The main cause of Belonephobia is a tragedy or trauma which might have occurred in the past that haunts the patients even now. This might be the cause for the patient to stop going for taking blood tests, immunizations, dental check ups, skin testing etc.
