Batophobia: Information, Causes and Treatment
October 6, 2008

Batophobia is defined as a phobia which is experienced by many individuals due to fear of heights or closing high buildings. This condition could be cured only by continuous treatment or therapy and it might even take years to cure it completely!

Batophobia is referred to as an abnormal fear that is experienced in many people while nearing great heights like a skyscraper or mountain. This problem usually gives importance and shows the blow of the standard of life. Some people experience fear even while coming close to very high buildings. Batophobia is defined by experts as "a persistent, abnormal, and unwarranted fear of heights or being close to high buildings". It is a clinical condition rather than a disease which is not noticed by all, but it is gaining importance and people have started noticing it.

People might be wondering about the cause of Batophobia. It acts as a protective mechanism and it is generated by the unconscious brain. Batophobia is experienced by people like any other phobia. Mostly people experience such kinds of fear either due to any trauma or tragedy which might have happened in the past related to heights or while being close to building of great altitudes. Another cause would be due to any experiences heard from friends or seen during watching television, movies etc.

The symptoms related to Batophobia are rapid breath taking moments, shortness of breath, heart beat which is irregular, nausea, vomiting, sweating, loneliness, dizziness, drying of mouth, feeling sick, shaking, inability to speak or clearly think, fear of dying, becoming violent as being mad or getting out of control, a feeling of aloofness from the situation and many more. Different people experience different kinds of symptoms and each vary depending on the nature of the condition.

Treatment of Batophobia takes a long time and also needs a lot of patience. It might take months or even years and above all it needs repeated exposure of the patient to the particular fear! Many experts convey that this repeated exposure might lead to worsening of the condition and also is said to be unnecessary. They say that Batophobia can be cured by the accurate method and even within 24 hours time. Nowadays it is estimated that about 80% of the patients can be cured by treating them but it might take a long time. It can be accurately said that 5% of the patients can be cured permanently but in the case of 80% figure it could vary.

Curing Batophobia by administering drugs is not a task to be accomplished. Batophobia or any other phobias can never be cured by drugs even though these are recommended. The only work done by these drugs are to suppress the condition or the symptoms related to it. Therefore the only way of curing Batophobia is by attending clinics which do not recommend any drugs. These clinics let a person to be free of tensions and be happy by making mind light and it also makes a person feel something different about heights and being close to high buildings. Such a technique lets a person feel fearless about heights and things related to it. This might entirely change the condition and make the person fearless of heights and altitudes.
