Ballistophobia: Information, Causes and Treatment |
||||||||||||||||||
Today almost all shows on television show some sort of violence or the other. There are car chases, murders and shootouts that all involve the shooting of bullets. Though this may be a form of entertainment to some people, to others, the sight and sounds is something that they fear very much.
This unwarranted fear of missiles and bullets is a phobia called ballistophobia and exists in many people. People suffering from ballistophobia tend to dread the sound and sight of missiles and bullets and this is the reason they tend to avoid watching movies and serials where there are many shootouts and fighting. With this fear, they tend to get edgy when watching a movie with friends and family as they harbor a fear of when the next bullet will be shot.
So in such cases, people suffering from ballistophobia tend to avoid movies and television serials and in the process tend to become loners. They avoid friends as they don't actually want to watch movies with them, or go out. Even when going out, it is highly probable for them to see or hear the firing of bullets and missiles from the homes of other people.
However, if a person is suffering from ballistophobia, it is important that the person not hide from the problem but in fact, look for a solution for it. This is possible only on opening oneself about the problem to others. One solution is the drugs found in the market today to cure ballistophobia. The drugs here do offer some relief from ballistophobia; however, it should be known that this relief is short lived and that once the medication is stopped the signs and symptoms that accompany ballistophobia tend to reoccur.
People suffering from ballistophobia tend to suffer from panic attacks when they encounter shooting of bullets and missiles. These panic attacks include irregular heartbeat, nausea, increased breathing and shortness of breath. Sometimes, repeated exposure to bullets and missiles is the therapy adopted to rid a person from ballistophobia. However, this therapy is not advised as in such cases, what happens is that the person tends to suffer from intense panic attacks which only aggravates the condition.
The best thing to do to rid oneself from ballistophobia is to approach a psychologist or a phobia clinic so that they can offer counseling to the patient. What happens is that the psychologist can counsel the patient to rid the main triggering point of ballistophobia. Once the trigger point is eliminated from the brain of the patient, the patient will be cured of ballistophobia.
The trigger point of ballistophobia is usually an event or incident that may have occurred some time in the past. This incident may be of a shooting, experiences of war or a murder of a loved one. So whenever the victim sees or hears bullet shots, these horrible memories are revoked. So to avoid these memories, these people tend to avoid bullets and missiles completely. So it is by providing counseling to the patient, wherein the trigger point is eliminated from their memory, the patient is relieved from ballistophobia.
