Bacteriophobia: Information, Causes and Treatment
March 12, 2010

It is difficult to pass a day without any contact with bacteria. So if and when you suffer from bacteriophobia, make it a point to get yourself cured by contacting the concerned people.

Modern day pollution has greatly increased the presence of bacteria in the air we breathe. This bacterium is the cause of many diseases and with this, there are many people who today find it rather uncomfortable to touch things or go to places for fear of getting contaminated with bacteria.

This abnormal fear for bacteria is a phobia called bacteriophobia and is a condition many people seem to suffer from. People suffering from bacteriophobia don't basically like going to places for fear of getting infected with diseases that stem from bacteria. This is why people suffering from bacteriophobia tend to become loners who avoid attending parties and public gatherings.

Similarly, people suffering from bacteriophobia find it difficult to get promotions in work and a corresponding increase in salary. This is because they will be more than reluctant to venture to new places and different offices for fear of contacting some bacteria or the other. These people generally keep their homes and offices bacteria free by spraying and wiping with disinfectants as much as possible. They thus don't feel confident enough to leave these disinfected places to other places because of a fear of infection from bacteria.

People suffering from bacteriophobia get panic attacks when exposed to bacteria. There are different symptoms that different people experience when in a panic attack. Some of the symptoms of these panic attacks are nausea, rapid breathing, sweating, shortness of breath and irregular heartbeat.

However, there is good news that the condition of bacteriophobia is a curable condition. Though you may find many drugs on the market that seems to have a cure for bacteriophobia, it is not the right choice for a cure from bacteriophobia. This is because these drugs offer only a temporary cure from bacteriophobia where once the drugs are discontinued; you experience the side effects and withdrawal symptoms of the drug.

Some people suggest repeated exposure to bacteria will help to cure bacteriophobia as they are of the impression that the body develops antibodies to fight the bacteria. However, in reality, this is not true as this repeated exposure only gives stronger panic attacks to the victim wherein they may experience a greater fear to bacteria. The best thing to be done to cure you from bacteriophobia will be to approach a psychologist or phobia clinic.

A visit to the psychologist provides relief to the victim as the psychologist has the capacity of counseling the victim. With this counseling, the basic fear that triggers bacteriophobia is eliminated. With the elimination of the triggering aspect of bacteriophobia, the patient is permanently cured from bacteriophobia.

Usually, it is a bad event or incident in the past life of the patient that brings back bad memories when in contact with bacteria. This event could be a bad case of some infection wherein a part of the body may have gotten disfigured in a friend or relative through bacteria. This is what usually triggers bacteriophobia and with the elimination of the thought from the mind, the patient is soon cured from bacteriophobia.
