Aviophobia: Information, Causes and Treatment |
||||||||||||||||||
The airplane is today a great means of transportation as people reach destinations faster and in more comfort than any other type of transportation. Inter-continental destinations are covered the fastest via airplane. However, though many people use airplane to travel, there is a minority that have a fear of airplanes. And people having a fear of air travel are those suffering from a phobia called aviophobia.
As it can be seen, the most obvious disadvantage and problem one faces with aviophobia is that traveling can be very inconvenient. Travel is associated with many things; going on a vacation, attending functions and getting posted in different places with promotions. So a person suffering from aviophobia will most likely get tired traveling by road to places for vacation and attending functions. Some places can be reached only by air as otherwise the journey takes a very long time to complete.
In such cases, the person suffering from aviophobia will not be able to make the necessary travel to such places. Similarly, promotions and guest conferences in different countries cannot be accepted by a person suffering from aviophobia as the mode of travel in such cases is by airplane wherein time is saved. So with aviophobia, a person may not be able to make the right advancements in their career.
However, if and when suffers from aviophobia, it is necessary for them to approach the relevant person for a cure from it. Though you may find many drugs in the drug market that claim it provides a cure from aviophobia, these drugs only give a temporary cure from aviophobia. The relief from aviophobia is short lived and panic attacks occur on the discontinuation of drugs. With this discontinuation of drugs, the patient also suffers from its side effects and withdrawal symptoms.
So it can be seen that drugs does not cure one of aviophobia. Similarly, repeated exposure to airplanes is no help in eliminating aviophobia, as is generally thought. The only thing that is attained is that the person may get more intense panic attack which is accompanied by nausea, irregular heartbeat, rapid breathing and an overall feeling of dread. The best thing to do is to approach a psychologist or a phobia center where the victim is counseled wherein the basic fear that invokes aviophobia is eradicated from the mind.
It is usually an event or incident that had occurred in the past which triggers aviophobia. The person may have lost a family member or friend in an airplane accident or may have seen some air accidents in their dreams wherein they have a subconscious fear of airplanes. So with a bit to avoid these dreams from repeating themselves in the mind, the victim tends to avoid airplanes completely, and this is how and where aviophobia manifests itself in the brain of the victim.
So it is very important that a person suffering from aviophobia seek help and not shy away from the problem. It is only with the right help and guidance that the person will be able to be cured from aviophobia in the nick of time.
