Autophobia: Information, Causes and Treatment
March 12, 2010

If you have an unwarranted fear of being left alone in the home, then you may not worry too much about the condition as there are many people who suffer from this condition, autophobia. Don’t hide about the condition; instead, bring it out in the open so that the right treatment can be rendered to cure the condition.

Social life is a must for everyone. It is mandatory for people to want to meet people frequently to get to know more friends and also be comfortable with new-comers in gatherings and parties. However, there are some people who stay in the company of other people for different reasons.

These people are always in the vicinity of people let them be neighbors, friends, family or relatives. This is because these people are people suffering from a phobia called autophobia. With autophobia, the person has an abnormal fear of solitude, being alone or oneself. This condition is known by other names like isolaphobia, monophobia and having a fear of being alone.

People suffering from autophobia are usually considered to be people without any guts or confidence. This is because they cannot stay alone in a room or any other place. When with friends, they make take this advantage and tend to purposely leave the victim in a solitary room and make fun of them. And basically, it may have been such an incident that may have triggered autophobia in the victim in the first place.

All phobias are generally started with an incident or event or situation that had taken place when the person was small where repeated memories of the situation tend to provoke the phobia. So in the case of autophobia, the victim may have been left alone in a room or place out of punishment from elders or for fun by some friends. Repeated recollection of this incident tends to provoke panic attacks in the victim. The panic attacks are usually rapid breathing, nausea, irregular heartbeat and sweating. Different people tend to experience different types symptoms.

So in a bid to avoid those unpleasant memories of the past, the victim tends to avoid the situation altogether; that is, avoid being alone. And this itself is what triggers autophobia. Victims avoid such situations so that they don't experience any panic attacks. However, if a person suffers from autophobia, there is no need of feeling embarrassed or shy of the situation. This is because there are many people suffering from the condition and there is a cure for it.

There are many drugs on the market that can be taken to cure autophobia. However, these drugs provide only a temporary cure from autophobia with the chemical reaction of the drug in the body. So when the drug is discontinued, the symptoms of autophobia may return with some side effects and withdrawal symptoms of the drugs. It is also of no use subjecting the victim to solitary confinement with a bid of eradicating autophobia. This is a theory many people adopt with the hopes of curing autophobia. However, this is not a good cure as solitary confinement only brings about more intense panic attacks for the victim.

The best thing to do for a cure from autophobia is to visit a psychologist or phobia clinic where the victim is given some counseling. With this counseling, autophobia is eliminated by getting to its trigger point. They work at eliminating the fear that first started autophobia, and with this, autophobia can be eliminated.
