Automysophobia: Information, Causes and Treatment |
||||||||||||||||||
Singapore is a city where you have to pay a fine for throwing rubbish in its streets. With this ruling, people tend to develop a habit of keeping things clean. And with this habit, many people not only keep their surroundings clean, but also themselves. There are thus now many people in Singapore, and many other places that develop automysophobia. Automysophobia is a condition where the victim develops an unwarranted fear of being or getting dirty.
Having automysophobia is a troublesome condition as it proves to be difficult to live with the condition. Victims cannot play for long or work for long as they fear getting dirty. It is necessary to exercise and play for health and fitness; and if there is automysophobia the victim will not play long for fear of getting dirty. Keeping the house clean will definitely make a person dirty and so a person with automysophobia may find it rather difficult to maintain the house.
Similarly, work in the office is sure to make a person dirty especially if the work involves working where there is lots of smoke and dirt. With automysophobia, the victim may not be able to accept some jobs for fear of getting dirty and with this; there is a probability of losing chances of getting promotions.
A person suffering from automysophobia should not shy away from society. Instead, they should explain that they are suffering from automysophobia, and find a cure for it. There are some drugs available in the market wherein automysophobia is cured. However the disadvantage of this drug is that the drug only provides a temporary cure from automysophobia. The discontinuation of the drugs will start symptoms of automysophobia again, with some side effects and withdrawal symptoms.
Some people may suggest repeated exposure to dirt to cure the victim of automysophobia. However, this theory is not worth it as with repeated exposure to dirt, the victim is more than likely to develop more intense panic attacks. The panic attacks victims of automysophobia usually experience produces symptoms like rapid breathing, sweating, nausea, shortness of breath and a feeling of dread.
The best option for cure from automysophobia is to approach a psychologist or phobia clinic. This is because the people here help in getting to the root of automysophobia that started it. Usually it is an event in the past life of the victim where something cynical or terrifying may have happened wherein they had gotten dirty. Like being a witness of a murder where the body may have gotten covered with blood.
In such cases, the victim tends to get panic attacks when they are dirty. So they prefer avoiding getting dirty so that there are no grisly memories of that fatal day. And it is with this that automysophobia tends to set in. and it is this memory that psychologists strive to eliminate, wherein automysophobia will be eradicated from the victim's mind. This is possible only with some counseling from the part of the psychologist or counselor wherein pretty soon you will find the victim cured of automysophobia.
