Automatonophobia: Information, Causes and Treatment
March 11, 2010

Living with a fear of wax statues and dummies proves to be a very difficult situation as it hampers social life. This is why people suffering from automatonophobia have to come forward and find a cure for it instead of hiding from it.

A visit to the wax museum to see so many beautiful wax statues of people and a ventriloquist show where the ventriloquist throws his voice using the dummy is a great pastime for many people. However, it is disheartening to learn that there are people who cannot enjoy this because of a health condition they have called automatonophobia.

Automatonophobia is one of the many fears man has today. It is basically a fear of ventriloquist dummies, wax statues and animatronic creatures. People suffering from this condition feel very uncomfortable when in the company of wax statues and dummies. They get panic attacks that differ from patient to patient. Some people experience irregular heartbeats while others experience rapid breathing and nausea.

Social life proves to be rather difficult for such patients as they cannot go to places where family members and friends go to like puppet shows, visit to wax museums and even shopping. The reason they find it rather difficult to go shopping as most shopping centers have mannequins displaying dresses. Looking at these mannequins, these patients tend to get panic attacks and thus, tend to avoid going to shopping centers.

However, people suffering from automatonophobia should not hide from their problem; but instead look for a cure for it. There are some drugs found in the market that claim to be effective in curing automatonophobia. However, though these drugs may produce relief from automatonophobia, this relief is usually temporary. Automatonophobia symptoms tend to reappear on the discontinuation of the drugs while some patients tend to experience withdrawal symptoms of the drugs.

It is no use exposing a person with automatonophobia to mannequins, dummies or wax statues as it only aggravates the situation. Some people think that the repetitive exposure of the victim to dummies will solve the situation when it actually only helps in aggravating the situation. The best thing that has to be done is have the patient visit a phobia clinic or a psychologist.

The reason it is better for the patient to visit a psychologist or phobia clinic is that they aim at finding out the cause for the fear through counseling and then, aim at eliminating automatonophobia. The main reason for the start of automatonophobia will be some event in the past of the patient. Perhaps they may have had some bad memories of being left alone in a museum of wax statues during the night and started hallucinating. Similarly, there may have been some real life scare in the life of the patient and on seeing a similar situation in TV or some benign events they tend to develop panic attacks.

This is why they tend to avoid wax statues and dummies so that these panic attacks don't occur at all and this is how automatonophobia starts. They get the impression that avoiding these wax statues and dummies is the cure to the problem when it isn't. The actual cure to the problem lies in eliminating the fear altogether from the brain and then, live a normal and happy life.
