Autodysomophobia: Information, Causes and Treatment
March 13, 2010

There is no need to feel embarrassed of your body odor wherein you develop autodysomophobia as there are many people suffering from a similar condition. With the right advice and treatment, it is possible to eliminate autodysomophobia from your body.

It is not always necessary that a person fears only the dark, ghosts and murderers. There are other things that a person may have a hidden fear of like a fear of water, heights and of men. These fears are called phobias, and it is interesting to learn that there are many different types of phobias existing in the world today. One of the more interesting phobias is referred to as autodysomophobia.

Autodysomophobia is generally an unwarranted fear of one having a vile odor. It is but human for people to emit a human body smell. Different people have different body odors because of chemical reactions in the body, food that is eaten and exercise on the part of the person. There are some people who feel embarrassed of the human body odor that they emit, and it is this fear that is called autodysomophobia.

It is quite difficult living with autodysomophobia as human body odor cannot be eliminated. Everyone will be emitting a body odor at all times; so it is difficult for a person with autodysomophobia to mix with other people in society. They will always be having a lingering fear about their body odor that they fret meeting people. Of course, though perfumes can reduce the intensity of the body odor, it cannot eliminate it completely.

As a person with autodysomophobia is not comfortable in the vicinity of others, they have a very bad social and office life. They cannot spend too much time with others and so become a loner. And in office, as they cannot stay with people for a long time, they find it difficult to put in over time and work harder to earn a promotion. Without promotions, income cannot be increased and thus the person in autodysomophobia feels more uncomfortable of their predicament.

However, it is not that those with autodysomophobia have to worry that they have to live with the condition throughout their lives. There are some cures that help to rid oneself from autodysomophobia. Drugs are quite effective in eliminating autodysomophobia; the only drawback here is that the cure is temporary and that the drugs have side effects and withdrawal symptoms.

Some people suggest the repeated exposure of the person to their personal body odor tends to reduce autodysomophobia. However this is not a good cure either as it is highly probable that the victim suffer from stronger and more panic attacks. Victims of autodysomophobia usually suffer from panic attacks when exposed to their human body odor and the symptoms of panic attacks tend to vary from patient to patient.

The best thing to do for a cure from autodysomophobia is to visit a psychologist or a phobia clinic. Here, the main thing the counselor does is to get to the root of the fear, and to eliminate it from the brain. Once the cause for the victim that led to autodysomophobia is eliminated the fear disappears and the victim can live a normal life like everyone else.
