Athazagoraphobia: Information, Causes and Treatment |
||||||||||||||||||
Athazagoraphobia is defined as the fear of (or strong reaction to) forgetting, being ignored, or normally anything dealing with the idea of forgetfulness. The definition can be extended to anger, depression, or deliberate isolation caused by one being forgotten, or dealing with death (thus being forgotten by those who have passed away).
Spiders, snakes, high places and public speaking make many people uncomfortable. But for some, these objects and settings cause overwhelming feelings of fear and apprehension - a reaction defined as a phobia. Phobias are fears, which are unwarranted compared to the reactions most people might have to the same object or in the same situation. If a fear of something is so sturdy you will do nearly anything to try and avoid it, it may be a phobia.
Common phobias include fear of blood, flying, confined spaces, and eating in public. Simple phobias are distinguished from panic attacks, which involve a "fight or flight" reaction and can occur out of the blue, not just in reaction to a specific situation or place. Athazagoraphobia, the fear of forgetting is a type of phobia more closely associated with panic.
The causes of phobias are varied. Some phobias start during childhood and may be linked to a vivid memory or experience. Other fears are ethnically learned, such as avoiding black cats, walking under ladders, or the number 13. Though these may be viewed as superstitions, when taken to extremes, they develop into phobias. In many cases, why a phobia develops is unknown.
Dealing with a phobia can vary according to a person's lifestyle and type of phobia. Some people are able to deal with their form by simply avoiding the objects or situations they fear. Thus, some people who are frightened of flying simply choose other means of transportation. And young people may outgrow their phobias. Yet if feelings are extreme, and alter your lifestyle, it is recommended to seek the help from a doctor or a qualified hypnotherapist.
There are numerous treatment options for phobias. One method is to help people desensitize themselves to their phobia, beginning with mental imagery. People with a phobia of snakes, for example, may be asked to try and imagine a snake until they can do so without being feared. Then, they may look at pictures of snakes or models of snakes and, finally, see or touch one in individuality. This method is rather slow and does have value, but not suitable for everyone and holds only a moderate success rate.
Becoming involved in support groups is another method to overcome phobias. Public speaking groups, for example, allow people with alike phobias to help one another learn to understand and deal with their fears. In some cases, medications are used to help people deal with their phobias, especially if they are related to social phobias such as eating or speaking in public.
Work in hypnosis offers the kind way out with a high success rate. Using regression, a simple technique that requests the mind to bring forward a memory in the past, habitually forgotten by conscious self, which hold vital information needed to change attitude, resulting in a change in behavior. Once the behavior changes, the phobia is cleared.
