Ataxiophobia: Information, Causes and Treatment |
||||||||||||||||||
The world is full of frightful things; different people have a fear for different things. Having a fear of ghosts, monsters and other ghastly things is quite normal. Then there are some people dread darkness, some airplanes and some water. Such fear is termed as phobias, and one of the many existing phobias is ataxiophobia.
Ataxiophobia is basically an unwarranted and abnormal fear of ataxia, or muscular incoordination. The meaning of ataxia itself is a lack of muscular coordination. This occurs with damage to a part of the central nervous system. So a person suffers from ataxiophobia, they tend to have a lack of balance where they sway or fall if not standing on a broad base.
People suffering from ataxiophobia generally don't feel confident enough to go out alone as they have a fear of not having the right balance. They feel they may fall or sway; and so to avoid this embarrassment and inconvenience, they tend to avoid going anywhere alone. The independence of such a person is reduced tremendously as they cannot go anywhere without worrying about suffering from lack of balance.
With ataxiophobia, it is quite difficult to get promotions in jobs, and thus a better income. Companies prefer having competent people at the helm of the company, and when an employee suffers from ataxiophobia, they may reconsider giving him/her a promotion. Social life is also disrupted as it is difficult to stand for long or dance because of lack of equilibrium.
Ataxiophobia stems with the development of ataxia. And one of the causes of ataxia is syphilis and diseases that damage the central nervous system. Some deficiency diseases, diseases of the spinal cord and overuse of drugs like barbiturates or alcohol tend to lead to ataxia too. With ataxia, the victim develops a fear complex and this is when panic attacks develop.
With panic attacks from ataxiophobia, the victim tends to experience rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath and nausea. There are many drugs that claim to cure ataxiophobia. However, there basically is no drug that can cure ataxiophobia. The drug may only offer some temporary relief from the symptoms of ataxiophobia with the chemical reaction of the drug with your body. There are some people who think that repeated exposure to the fear can help eradicate the fear like in the case of ataxiophobia, making the person do work involving muscle coordination on their own. However, this is not basically a feasible practice as sometimes, repeated exposure to the fear only exaggerates the condition. The best thing to do to eliminate ataxiophobia is to visit a psychologist or phobia clinic.
These psychologists help eliminate the fear from the mind, through counseling. With the elimination of the fear, or the cause for the start of ataxiophobia, victims usually experience complete cure from ataxiophobia. This is basically the best option to cure any friend or family from ataxiophobia. So if you suffer from ataxiophobia, there is basically no need of shying from it with embarrassment as there are many people like you in the world, who have been cured of the problem with the right guidance.
