It is not necessary that a person have a fear of only ghosts and animals. There are many people suffering from fears of other things like a fear of darkness, fear of heights and fear of closed places. These fears are categorized as phobias; and people generally suffer from one phobia or the other.
Astrophobia is one of the many existing phobias and is basically an unwarranted fear of stars and celestial space. This is a phobia many people are suffering from nowadays, but feel embarrassed to tell or seek help for the condition. When a person suffers from astrophobia, the person usually goes through panic attacks when looking at the star and celestial space. There are various symptoms associated with astrophobia like rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, nausea, sweating and a feeling of dread of stars. Different people generally suffer from different symptoms.
Astrophobia is known by other names like fear of stars and fear of celestial space. It is difficult living with astrophobia as sufferers of astrophobia cannot look out of windows on starry nights. There will not be much of romance in their lives; moreover they cannot enjoy the peace and tranquility a quiet, starry night beholds them. Neither can they enjoy themselves when friends, relatives and office members visit a planetarium!
Astrophobia sometimes leads to solitude because of this; however, this does not meant that there is no cure for astrophobia. There are different cures; some say that drugs help in curing astrophobia. These drugs do help in curing astrophobia, but only temporarily. The relief the sufferer feels from this drug is actually due to the chemical reaction of the drug in the body. However, prolonged use of this drug usually leads to side effects and some withdrawal symptoms. So it is basically not that beneficial to take drugs to cure astrophobia.
Some people also claim to cure astrophobia by subjecting the victim to repeated exposure of their fear. This means they are made to look at stars and celestial space repeatedly, assuming that this will rid them of their fear. However, this is not so as this usually leads to an increased feeling of astrophobia in the patient.
Basically, the best remedy to cure astrophobia would be to attend one of the many phobia clinics or a psychologist. This is the better cure as through counseling, the victim is taught to eliminate the fear they have embedded in their minds for stars and celestial space. This proves to be a more permanent cure for the victim as they learn to control their thoughts, and the trigger for astrophobia.
The trigger for astrophobia is generally an incident that may have occurred sometime in the past of the victim that is associated with stars and celestial space. They may have maybe seen a murder or a rape in the middle of the night of a loved one or family member. This memory lingers in their mind and whenever they are subjected to stars or celestial space, memories of the fatal night returns. So they tend to avoid stars so as to avoid kindling these memories, and this is what starts astrophobia.
