Astraphobia: Information, Causes and Treatment |
||||||||||||||||||
Phobias are quite common; they are basically names for the fears different people have for different things. Some people have a fear of the darkness, some of water and some of closed spaces. Then there are people suffering from other fears like astraphobia which is a fear of thunder and lightning.
Astraphobia is referred to by other names like brontophobia, astrapophobia, ceraunophobia, keraunophobia, tonitrophobia and fear of thunder and lightning. People suffering from astraphobia basically cannot stand the sight and sounds of thunder and lightning. They tend to run helter skelter when there are thunderstorms and heavy lightning and thunder.
With astraphobia, they tend to become embarrassed with their condition and may be unwilling to go anywhere during rainy seasons or when there is heavy rains. This is because they will not be able to face the thunder and lightning and may hide in places like under the sofa or bed in fear.
Thus astraphobia makes living difficult as with embarrassment, there may not be any social life; watching movies with family and friends may be difficult, if there are scenes of thunder and lightning and promotions may be unlikely if it is not possible to attend office during the rainy season because of thunder and lightning.
The start of astraphobia is usually an event which may have occurred in the victim's past where someone may have died due to heavy thunder and lightning. Then someone may have also gotten lost with the heavy rains; so whenever the victim sees any thunder or lightning, they tend to remember that fatal day. So to avoid this, they avoid thunder and lightning completely; and this itself is astraphobia.
When suffering from astraphobia, it is important that the condition be shared with others, and help sought. This is because astraphobia is a condition that can be solved, with the right treatment. There are some drugs found in the market that claim to help solve astraphobia. However, there is no point in taking these drugs as these drugs don't help eradicate astraphobia. It only provides some temporary relief with the chemical reaction of the drug in the body. In the long run, these drugs have side effects and withdrawal symptoms that may have ill effects on the body.
Then there are some people who claim that astraphobia can be cured with the repeated exposure to thunder and lightning. Some people claim that with exposure to their fear, their condition is cured. However, basically this is the wrong approach to be taken. This is because with repeated exposure, the person only develops a deeper fear for thunder and lightning.
It is instead better to approach a phobia clinic or some psychologist who can help eliminate the fear of thunder and lightning that exists in the victim. This is done through some counseling, and some psychology. And pretty soon, astraphobia is eradicated from the patient for forever.
It can thus be seen that if you suffer from astraphobia, there is no point in hiding about it. It is better to seek help so that you can fear yourself from this fear and live in happiness with your family, friends and office-workers.
