Arsonphobia: Information, Causes and Treatment |
||||||||||||||||||
A phobia is basically a hidden and inner fear for one thing or the other. There are many people who suffer from different phobias for some reason or the other. Some of the most common phobias are fear of height, water, closed spaces and insects. However, there are also cases of less known fears or phobias like arsonphobia.
Arsonphobia is basically a persistent and unwarranted fear of fire or flames. Other names for this condition are pyrophobia, fear of fire and fear of flames. Whatever the name one calls this fear by, its symptoms during panic attacks are the same. When under a panic attack of arsonphobia, the person usually suffers from rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, nausea and a feeling of dread on seeing flames or fire. These panic attacks may not occur when seeing real fire; there are many people who get panic attacks just by looking at fire and flames on theaters or the television.
It is no use living in shame if you suffer from arsonphobia. It is important that you consult a psychologist and try to eradicate arsonphobia. This is because this fear may cause you your life and happiness. With arsonphobia, your career, family life, health and school life are at stake. If you avoid solving this problem, you only end up living in fear just waiting for the problem to solve, which is not possible.
Now one may wonder how arsonphobia starts. It is usually started by the unconscious mind that tends to protect itself from memories of some event linking with fire or flames that brought about the emotional trauma. This event is sort of a catalyst for arsonphobia, and whenever the sufferer sees any fire or flames, the same event comes to mind and the same fear that he or she had experienced then manifests itself.
So what happens is that the mind tends to develop an idea of steering clear away from any form of flames or fires. This means that watching television serials with flames in the scene will be quite difficult for a person suffering from arsonphobia as he or she will not be able to tolerate the fear associated with it.
Different people tend to find arsonphobia manifest itself in different ways in the body. Some people tend to experience the fear only when seeing real life fires and flames, while others tend to get upset and frightened when looking at flames and fires both in real life and on screen.
There is basically no use taking any of the many drugs found in the market today for curing arsonphobia. This is because these drugs only give some temporary relief from arsonphobia, and don't actually cure one of arsonphobia. This relief is provided by the chemical reaction of the drug in the body. Moreover, these drugs only give some side effects and the withdrawal symptoms of the drug can be rather severe.
A better alternative to curing yourself of arsonphobia is to visit one of the many phobia clinics. These phobia clinics aim at curing your phobia by controlling your mind so that you eliminate the fear of fire and flames from your mind. This is done through counseling and psychology where they reach the inner cells of your brain with thoughts that help you fight this fear of fire and flames.
