Apotemnophobia Relates to Excessive Fear of A Situation
March 13, 2010

This fear takes on an unconquerable proportion, only when it turns into an Apotemnophobia. An Apotemnophobia could be related to something that might not harm us at all. It is just a reaction to a situation or object gone twisted.

A phobia is an excessive fear or dread of a situation or object which is out of keeping with the danger it may in fact present. Phobias can be categorized into 'simple phobias', 'social phobias' and agoraphobia. A number of psychological theories have been put forward to account for both the inception and maintenance of a phobia. The case of a social phobia is presented together with a package called as cognitive behavioral intervention package

Apotemnophobia (from the Greek apotemnein, "cut" and phobos, "fear") is a pathological fear of amputation or amputees. When a person who suffers from this specific phobia sees an amputee, they will frequently feel restless and try to escape the situation. In grave cases a fight-or-flight response or panic attack may occur. In spite of how strong the symptoms can be, the person is usually aware that there is no real ground for their fear. Many Apotemnophobia sufferers are most affected by the view of the flailing unnatural stump, which causes the massive dread by the sense there should be impressive there.

In most cases the Apotemnophobia can be treated with psychological techniques. The treatment method depends on the person and the way the phobia has aroused.

Whatever the source of the problem, some people with Apotemnophobia repeatedly relive the trauma in the form of nightmares and disturbing recollections during the day. They may also experience sleep problems, feeling detached or numb, depression, or being easily startled. They may lose interest in things they used to enjoy and have trouble-feeling loving. They may feel irritable, or aggressive than before, or even violent. Seeing things that remind them of the incident may be very upsetting, which could lead them to avoid certain places or situations that bring back those memories.

Apotemnophobia may occur at any age, including childhood. The disorder can be accompanied by depression, anxiety or substance abuse. Symptoms may be mild or severe--people may become easily annoyed or have violent outbursts. In severe cases they may have trouble working with or socializing. In general, the symptoms seem to be worse if a person--such as a rape, as opposed to a flood, initiated the event that caused them.

Ordinary events can serve as reminders of the trauma and cause flashbacks or intrusive images. A flashback may make the person lose touch with reality and rebuild the event for a period of seconds or hours or, very rarely, days. A person having a flashback, which can come in the form of images, smells, sounds, or feelings, usually believes that the traumatic event is happening all over again.

Not every traumatized person gets full-blown Apotemnophobia, or experiences Apotemnophobia at all. Apotemnophobia is diagnosed only if the symptoms last more than a month. In those who do have Apotemnophobia, symptoms usually begin within 3 months of the trauma, and the course of the illness varies. Some people recover just within 6 months, others have symptoms that last much longer. In some cases, the situation may be chronic. Rarely, the illness failed to show up, until years after the traumatic event.
