Impotence is an issue that most men are unwilling to talk about because they would hate to admit to it in public. But, the fact is that impotence is not really that big a deal and there may be a many a reason for it. When blood is pumped into your penis and makes it hard by staying there an erection occurs. However, when this fails to happen it's called impotence.
Impotence may be caused due to various reasons - anxiousness about performance during sex, tiredness, stress, relationship problems, emotional problems, depression etc. However, impotence may be treated in many cases but one needs to be open to the idea of seeking help, and not just hiding the problem.
The most common psychological cause for impotence is anxiety. Yet, the opposite may be true too; i.e. impotence may be the cause for anxiety as well. Truth is, it often becomes difficult to determine which causes which. There's a very fine line between the two, and you may not be able to figure out whether your impotency is making you anxious or whether the anxiety you suffer from is leading to your impotency. The basic point is that anxiety and impotence are related and interconnected. Often, prescription drugs that are used to treat anxiety interfere and cause impotence.
The anxiousness one suffers from during sex is called performance anxiety. It is a fairly common problem and many are know to suffer from it. In fact, for many men it's an issue they have trouble dealing with and don't know how to overcome. Men stress over issues such as the size of their penis, not being able to adequately satisfy their partner, not being able to perform properly during sex, or even consciousness regarding their appearance. These issues cause tremendous anxiety in men, and hinders their ability to perform.
Anxiety often magnifies in proportions especially in the minds of men. Added to the problems stated above, men tend to worry about impotency problems that may have occurred in the past even if it was just on one occasion. This may cause severe anxiety, while on the other hand the anxiety that one suffers from may cause a man to become physiologically incapable of being aroused or even fail to get an erection.
It is often seen that a man's peak period of success in the fields of work, family and social stature are related to his ability to perform. When there is a decline in this success, his anxiety and stress levels increase and this leads to impotency related to problems.
It is believed that one can overcome impotence with the help of medication, but this is only temporary. Anxiety occurs in the mind and that is what needs to be cured before anything else can be dealt with. The self-doubt and the stress that one goes through can only be cured by concerted effort by the individual concerned. Impotence and anxiety have to both be cured simultaneously and not one at a time.
