Anxiety Panic Attacks Disorder: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

July 25, 2008

Staring at the computer monitor knowing her turn was next; Christina felt warm streams of sweat roll down from her temples in anticipation of her yearly review. She had no idea what to expect and from the looks on her co-workers faces she didn't want to know. Her heart began to hammer in her chest and tears flooded her eyes as she remembered all the times she was late to work. "How could I be so stupid?" she thought shaking her head. Christina began to tremble uncontrollably especially in her knees. "I can't lose my job!" she yelled inside her head. By the time her boss came around to her, Christina was already in an anxiety panic state and it took 30 minutes of coaxing to get her to calm back down.

Have you ever felt like this before? Don't worry, you are not alone! About 13.1 million people in the United States suffer from an anxiety disorder such as the one described above. And although there are more people who suffer from anxiety panic attacks then drug abusers or alcoholics, only about 25% of the population actually seeks professional help.

What causes anxiety panic attacks?

Before you start thinking it's your smelly demanding boss or the guy who cut you off on the highway into work let's get the facts straight.

Anxiety is usually caused by apprehensive thinking resulting often in physical signs such as rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, profuse sweating, dizziness, and even feeling light-headed. In other words, you feel like you've just blown up about 20 balloons in the middle of the jungle! Panic attacks most often occur from anxiety, but also come on when least expected and certainly not when wanted. Combined into one, anxiety panic attacks can result in more than just sweating and not being able to catch your breath - it can rob you of life, love and good mental health.

If you are not sure if you suffer from anxiety panic attacks or a disorder, consider the following symptoms:

  • Feeling tired even though you think you got enough rest (or maybe not enough from thinking too much?)
  • Cold or icy feeling (especially if you're not in the Antarctic but feel like it!)
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet and/or other various places in the body
  • Hyperactivity or excess energy (yet you didn't have a teaspoon of sugar)
  • Constant urge to use the restroom (urinate)
  • Dramatic mood swings (these are not cute, no matter how cute you are!)
  • Feel like crying for no reason quite often (wipe those tears, there is hope!)

And many, many more symptoms.

Luckily, there is hope for these debilitating attacks. Because I am not a doctor, I will not pretend to know which medications can help with more extreme cases, but I can tell you what I have learned. Anxiety panic attacks can be overcome with patience, hope, and support using 1 or more of the following options listed below.

  • Behavior Therapy - While this method uses the most time to overcome attacks, it can become a lifelong success by learning to deal with stressful situations.
  • Cognitive Therapy - By taking the time to distinguish real from unreal thoughts and situations, a person can achieve lifelong results.
  • Medication - An immediate result or no? Many medications can cause short or long-term side effects so these need to be used with caution. Some people have chemical imbalances in their brain thus negating the necessity of using medication. Use only under physician supervision.
  • Relaxation Techniques - With training on breathing properly (you read that right, many people do not breathe right!) and utilizing certain exercises, a person can overcome anxiety panic attacks for life.

There are most likely more treatment techniques for anxiety panic disorders that have not been listed here. Be sure to consult your physician and utilize your local library or internet resources to learn more.

Be sure to consult your physician for more symptoms and even possible diagnosis of anxiety panic attacks to see what you can do together to help you get through. Remember, no matter who you are or what you've been through in life, you too can suffer from anxiety panic or know someone who has. Before you think that you've got things under control and your symptoms aren't nearly as bad as someone else's, think again. Be sure to take care of yourself - body and mind.
